Cold Lake First Nation’s council sworn-in at Treaty Days

Cold Lake First Nations welcomed the new Chief and council at the Nation’s Treaty Days celebration.

Newly elected Chief Roger Marten alongside council members Deion Blackman, Kelsey Jacko, George Machatis, Bernice Martial, Travis Machatis, and Gina Russell swore their oath of office in front of nation members to begin the annual celebration.

The election for council was June 26.

Martin said it’s a bright future for Cold Lake First Nations.

“It’s so nice to see all the love from all the families and friends. I’d like to stop the animosity towards each other. Let’s get back to the way it used to be,” said Martin in his opening remarks at the ceremony.

Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland was also asked to spoke briefly at the ceremony.

“For the City of Cold Lake, Cold Lake First Nations is our partner. On council, our job is to work together.

“I’m sure under Roger’s leadership we’re going to continue that tradition going forward.”

The previous Chief was Bernice Martial.

Cold Lake First Nations celebrates Treaty Days

The Treaty Days celebration began Friday at the English Bay campgrounds with a weekend full of activities including hand games, canoe tug of war, the cram the car contest, and a talent show with jigging and performances.

The Friday night dance saw the Country Frye band perform and Saturday night campers were treated to “the Joe Show” a magic, comedy performance before the fireworks.
