Prolific offender captured by Vermilion RCMP

Just before noon on May 1, 2019 the Vermilion RCMP received a complaint of a dangerous driver on Highway 16 at Highway 893.

Immediately afterwards, a second call was received reporting a stolen Dodge truck matching the description of the driving complaint. The vehicle was located a short distance away but was able elude police by travelling through fences and driving off road.

Police quickly located the vehicle, abandoned in a field.

Police Dog Services from both Lloydminster and Cold Lake successfully tracked the suspect to a wooded area where he surrendered without incident.

47 year old Curtis Dean SCHAAF of Edmonton has been charged with 13 offences that include:

  • Theft over $5000 x 2
  • Dangerous Driving
  • Driving While Prohibited
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime x 4
  • Mischief x 3
  • Possession of Break In Instruments

At the time of the offences, SCHAAF was wanted on a Canada wide warrant for violating conditions of his parole.

Police recovered a notable sum of Canadian and foreign currency and would like to appeal to the public that if they are missing a collection of currency like this, to contact the Vermilion RCMP at 780-853-4441.

SCHAAF has been remanded in custody and will next appear in Vermilion Provincial Court on May 6, 2019.
