Elk Point players getting noticed in spring hockey league

News from Hockey Alberta late last week, one of our former hockey players from our 2018 provincial silver medal-winning Peewee Avalanche team, Cash ‘Paycheque’ Capjack, was selected as one of the top Hockey Alberta Peewee prospects.

Tryouts for the Peewee Prospects teams were held in four different locations across the province. The kids from the north part of the province came to Vegreville two weeks ago.

Out of 120 players, 40 were selected to form two teams from the north. Eight teams have been formed across the province, 160 peewee players that were born in 2006 were selected and will be competing in a four-day tournament format completion held in Lethbridge from May 8th to 12th. Paycheque was selected to the North Grey team, along with 17 other skaters and two goalies.

Paycheque is known for playing a rugged two-way game, he’s a very skilled skater and stick hander with a hard accurate shot. This past weekend he played alongside his linemate, another former Elk Point powerful forward, ‘King Kong’ Konnor Poitras, in a tournament in Sylvan Lake with the Lakeland Lightning Peewee spring hockey team. The Lightning won all five games they played including the gold medal game.

King Kong and Paycheque both racked up the points leading the team with goals and assists.

In the final gold medal game, Paycheque was streaking down the wing, cutting hard into the net when he lost an edge and crashed into the goal post really hard. He had to be helped off the ice and taken to the hospital for x-rays where they found he had fractured a bone in his leg. Paycheque will be in a cast and on crutches for the next six to eight weeks and will, unfortunately, miss the Peewee Prospect tournament. But it could have been worse, of course. His leg will heal. He will be ready for the fall camps.
