Lakeland Yellowjackets finish indoor track and field season

The Lakeland Yellowjackets track and field team finished their indoor season at Provincials last weekend.

“We had a pretty successful season,” said Yellowjackets coach Larry Godziuk.

“Now we shift towards the outdoor season. Hopefully, the snow melts sooner rather than later and get on the outdoor track and get some good training in.”

At the final meet of the season, U18 boys competitor Mason Sartain finished 1st in the 60m in 7.15 seconds. That was a new personal best for Sartain.

U18 girls competitor Alese Sartain earned second in the 60m with a time of 7.83 seconds. She also finished fourth in the long jump with a 5.08-metre leap.

In the U16 boys category, Duncan Critch finished first in the shotput for his third provincial championship in a row in shotput. He threw roughly 13m for the gold medal.

In the U10 boys category, Ian Karba earned third place in the triathlon (60m, medicine ball throw, 400m).

“We had quite a few kids, more kids attend the last two track meets, especially our U10’s, our tykes. Lots of good energy and enthusiasm. Ian Karba had the best results out of all of them, but Phoenix and Julien did well as well,” said Godziuk.

“It was nice to see other kids represent the club other than Mason and Alese.”

Mason and Alese Sartain are some of the most consistent track and field performers in the lakeland and have some goals moving into the outdoor season.

“We’re aiming for our first 10-second 100-metre runner. We’re hoping for a high 10.9 or a low 10.9 in the outdoor season,” said Godziuk.

Heading into the outdoor season, Mason sits just over 11 seconds.

“That’s spectacular, especially in Grade 11.”

The big outdoor track meets don’t happen until late May when schools host their competitions.
