The Assumption Crusaders Senior High Girls basketball team has won 2A basketball zones for the third consecutive season.
The girls team defeated Ashmont in the zone final Saturday 84-32 to advance to 2A Girls ASAA Basketball Provincials this weekend.
Coach Shawn Belsher said the team came into zones ranked first and played some of the best ball of the season.
“We had never played Ashmont. They played in a different league this year and we didn’t see them at any tournaments at all.
“We had strong performances from everyone. Our starting lineup right through to the girls coming off the bench all had very strong performances.
“It was one of the most complete basketball games I think I’ve ever had as a coach.”
The Crusaders have five senior girls on the team. Georgia Rimmer and Gabbie Dumont both scored 16 points each in the final.
Ashmont won a tournament this year in Fort McMurray and Belsher said their opponents were formidable.
The Crusaders defeated Ecole Notre Dame in the zones semi-final 58-28.
The Crusaders will leave tomorrow after school and begin their journey to La Crete for provincials.
Assumption Sr. High is ranked 12th of 12 teams at the provincial tournament.
“We go in as the underdog,” said Belcher.
This is the third year in a row the Assumption Sr. Girls have been to Provincials. They’ve been ranked 10, 11, and 12 in those tournaments.
“This year, like last year, it’s probably one of the strongest tournaments that they have. Every team there is a strong team.
“In our first game, we play #5 ranked Rundle College out of Calgary. We haven’t played them but we’ve seen them a couple of times. Very good squad and it will be a good challenge for our girls.
If Assumption were to win, they’d play the #4 ranked Calgary Christian High in the next round.
