Student teams from two LCSD schools (École Dr. Bernard Brosseau Middle School and Light of Christ Catholic School) participated in this year’s Skills Exploration Day at Expo Centre in Edmonton on January 23, 2019.
The event is put on by Skills Canada Alberta and builds on the Maker Day model as well as the Career and Technology Foundations (CTF) Program of Studies. The event saw one hundred and eighty-seven students from grades 7-9 participating on day two.
Student had opportunities to rotate through various Learn-A-Skill stations including Carpentry, Cabinet Making, Welding, Sheet Metal, Painting and Decorating, Fashion Technology, Graphic Design, Electrical and Plumbing.
CTS/Dual Credit Coordinator Amanda Wildman said, “This was the first year that LCSD schools participated in this event. Our students’ interests were sparked through the experiences they had at the Learn-A-Skill stations. Watching students work as a team to design a solution to solve a problem and then apply what they learned about the various trades and technologies to construct their prototype was invigorating. This experience truly does serve to support them at a pivotal point in their education journey.”
The goals for the day are to: inspire junior high school students to identify inherent skills and interests; connect skills and interests to trade and technology careers through interactive, hands-on experiences that promote creativity, empathy and exploration; and promote trade and technology career pathways as valuable and rewarding career possibilities.
