Brown named interim Cold Lake Wings coach as Aitken leaves team

The Cold Lake Wings have made a change to their coaching staff.

Head coach and general manager Johnathan Aitken was released from the team last week after posting a (2-10-1-1) record.

Bryan Brown, formerly coach of the Jr. B Vegreville Rangers, takes over in the interim.

“It was just needed,” said Brown.

“It just wasn’t a good match basically because it’s a GM/coach position, not just coach and not just GM. So you have to have the ability to do both positions, and if you don’t you end up failing, right?”

Brown has been part of the WPHA since the league began this year, and says the ability to do both positions is  how the league operates.

Brown said they the Wings are hoping to announce a replacement at the end of the week, or the beginning of next week, but will wait to “find the right person.”

They’ve interviewed up to five candidates for the dual position.

The Cold Lake Wings are currently on an 11 game losing streak and at the bottom of the WPHA standings.

Friday night, the Wings host the Meadow Lake Mustangs in the first half of a home-and-home.

Aitken declined to comment.
