The St. Paul Lions celebrate their silver medal after falling to the Canmore Wolverines 24-10 Friday night at
The Cinderella season for the St. Paul Lions has come to an end, and the team will have to settle for a Provincial silver medal.
The Lions were taken down in Friday night’s Alberta Bowl by the Canmore Wolverines 24-10.
They beat the Stettler Wildcats 20-10 on home field last weekend to advance to the Alberta Bowl.
Ranked ninth, St. Paul was the lowest seed to ever advance to the Tier IV final.
The Cold Lake Royals from last season and McNally’s squad from 2009, both #8 seeds, previously held the record.
It is the first Provincial gold for the Canmore Wolverines, who defeated the defending Tier IV champs from Willow Creek and upset #1 ranked W.R. Myers to earn their spot.
St. Paul finished their regular season 4-2 in Wheatland Football League play, which was good enough for 3rd in the standings. They lost in the first round to the Holy Rosary Raiders 40-0.
