It is… What it is

Elk Point Novice Avalanche line up following a win against Saddle Lake.

Tales from the Timebox: November 13th, 2018

Not a heck of a lot of games were scheduled this past weekend. Why? The league re-tiering took most of the week. A lot of the teams only found out late Thursday or early Friday what tier they were going to be playing in and who they needed to contact to set up games. I understand the league trying to get it right. And for the most part, it think they did.
It would appear our Midget team is moving up a notch to Tier 2, which was formally Tier 1 in the old days. Our Atoms and Peewee teams will remain in Tier 3 , that was Tier 2 until last year. Are you as confused as I am?  Hockey Alberta is trying to get all the leagues on the same page and then have the top team in the North East league in Tier 1 and 2 compete for provincials.
Other leagues across the province would be doing the same. Tier 3 and down would not be eligible to play provincials. There won’t be Zone 2 champions going to the provincial finals anymore. The top team in the league in each division will go. And there won’t be an Atom provincial, just Peewee and up. Doesn’t seem fair to me, but they must have done some kind of study on it. This year Hockey Alberta is doing the league winner goes to provincial finals in the Peewee level only. If it works for them, then next year it would be all the levels. Personally, I don’t like the idea at all.
After the referee clinic had finished on Saturday, our Atom team played a league game at 5.30 against Frog Lake. Very rare for an Atom team to be playing that late in the day, but it was necessary to get our referees certified or we wouldn’t have any officials for any games at all.
This was a tough outing for the Avalanche, not only did they come up against a very tough goalie who they peppered with 59 shots but could only get 7 past him, but also a one man army on their offense. They came up against a sharp shooting sniper who hit the target for 8 of their goals and assisted on two others.  The final score 10-7 for the T Birds.
Our guys spread their goals around, five different goals scorers in this one. Evett ‘Snoop Dog’ Smereka with two goals,  brothers ‘Goodyear Charlie’ and Braylee ‘Little Willy’ Lesyk with one goal each. ‘Without a Trace’ Morgan, and Rhyley Kozicky finding the twine with one each too. Defenseman Raif ‘Rug Rat’ Evans Anderson with a goal and an assist. ‘Madden ‘ Mad Dog’ Flamand with two helpers, Boe ‘Dog’ St. George, Kaysen ‘Dynamite’ DeMossiac and Brenden ‘Buzz Saw’ Kudutski with one assist each. Kale ‘the Hawk’ Ockerman between the pipes in this one was busy trying to stop the torpedoes. Maybe the next time they meet we may come up with a plan to shut down their big green scoring machine.
A few hours after the Remberance Day Ceremonies on Sunday, the Midget Avalanche took on Cold Lake here at home winning 5-2 . A great team effort, the goals and assist are really spread out well in this one too. Five different guys scoring and five different guys getting the assists.
Chase ‘Rink Rat’ Dorey, Tyler Jamieson, ‘Lighting Liam’ Ludlage, Nick ‘Sparky’ Anderson and Jaden ‘Jet Stream’ Van Maarion all scoring goals . Brothers Hank ‘the Tank’ and Charlie ‘Chuckles ‘Rogal, Hayden ‘Hotwheels’ Ludlage, ‘Danny Boy’ Cardinal, and ‘King Cole’ Bendixen all getting an assist. Goaltender Colten ‘Colt 45’ Van Maarion stood strong facing 39 shots. And of course what would a Midget hockey game be without a few penalties, or should I say it was a little rough out there and there’s more than just a few penalties on the game sheet and most likely a couple of suspensions too.
Our Novice Avalanche played at home early Saturday morning. There’s not an official  game sheet to go on , so I rely on some of the parents to try and mark down what they saw. Because I don’t care what Hockey Alberta thinks, I do like to see the kids names in the paper. So here we go: Remington ‘Steel ‘ Reynolds with 2 goals and 5 assists. ‘Wild Wyatt’ Fontaine with 6 goals and 3 assists. Kestyn Quinney with 5 assists. Jaxon ‘Smitty ‘ Smith with 4 goals. Theo ‘Long Horn’ Loughran with 2 goals and 2 assists. Jessee James Penner with 2 goals and 7 assists. William ‘Billy Bob’ Ballas with 2 goals and 3 assists. ‘Major Tom’ Melnyk with 4 goals and 1 assist . And Denys ‘the Menace’ Kuba with 3 goals and 1 assist. Behind the mask with the big pads to pack around , goalie Ryder ‘Rhino’ Malo played spectacular with the help of his shot blocking defenseman Jackson ‘ J.R. ‘ Rawlake.
Over in the Bantam Female hockey league playing for the Lakeland Jaguars Rylee ‘the Rocket’ Warawa scored a goal and an assist in a 6-1 win over the Vermilion Tigers on this past Saturday. She was celebrating her 13th birthday that day so it was a nice present for her. Jadey ‘the Lady’ Capjack also plays for that same team. The former Storm defense women is now been moved up and is playing forward and has become a goal scorer as well . The game was against another former Storm player Sydnee ‘the Kid’ Crawford who now plays for the Tigers and is one of their leading offensive players.
And now for the K.A. Campbell quote of the week. ‘ Some may have more talent, but there is NO EXCUSE for anyone working harder than you. ” – John Tavares
