Anson Smith signs with the Wings
Anson Smith (’01), former Lakeland Panthers Midget AA player, is the newest addition to the Wings’ roster after committing to the team for the upcoming season.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Wings, this is where it felt like I belong. The team has a great coaching staff and I’m able to play near home,” said Smith on his decision to join the team.
In 2016/17, the forward spent 27 games with the Lakeland Panthers of the Northern Alberta Midget Hockey League (since changed to Northern Alberta Hockey League), where he led the team in scoring with 26 points and 20 assists.
“Anson is a gifted offensive talent our community and fans will be familiar with,” said Head Coach and GM Johnathan Aitken.
“Expectations are much higher at this level and we welcome players like Anson who are willing to put in the extra work it takes to get to the next level in hockey.”
Last season, Smith played the bulk of his hockey with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers Midget AAA team where he was teammates with fellow Wings player Dorian Hall.
“There is comfort knowing someone else who is going down the same road. It’s pretty nice we get to be the players who will step up and try to pave the way for a new approach to furthering your hockey career,” said Smith.
In 2015/16 Smith was chosen to represent Team Northeast in the Alberta Cup. The Wings take to the ice for their first exhibition game on Sept. 28 in Cold Lake
