The Cold Lake Pickleball Club celebrated the grand opening of new dedicated courts on Saturday. President of the club, Clint Cook says the courts are a welcome addition for the entire area.
There are eight dedicated courts, with proper lines and permanent nets, explained Cook. “We won’t have to bring our own nets or take them down, they are always going to be there.” That’ll make a big difference to the club.
There are other courts in Cold Lake, however they are multi-use courts. The ones at Kinosoo and 4-Wing each have tennis and pickleball lines, as well as basketball courts. Cook said the new courts will only be used by pickleball players, “often times the other courts are occupied so we don’t get to play all the time.”
The new courts are located by the ball park at Imperial Place. “We wanted a location that was central for everyone in the city.”
“I want to thank the City of Cold Lake for building these courts and supporting pickleball.” The courts were built thanks to funding from the City, confirmed Cook. In 2017, City Council approved $200,000 to build the courts, at the time of this publication it was not known what the final cost of the courts were.
The possibilities with the new court are endless. For example, the club can host proper tournaments and bring in hundreds of pickleball players to Cold Lake. “Pickleball is just starting and we’re seeing it grow really quickly in popularity.”
Cook dispelled the common thought that pickleball is an older person’s sport. “A lot of seniors play pickleball, but if you look at the best players in the world, the ones winning all the tournaments, they’re 19-20 years old. The sport is really growing with the youth, too.”
The courts are open to the public, and other players in the Lakeland. If you are looking to learn how to play or to join the club, Cook suggests that you come out Tuesdays and/or Thursdays between 6:30 and 9:00 pm. “You can also find us on Facebook and people will post when they are going down to play,” Cook suggested social media is a great way to connect with other players.
