Lakeland Catholic School District would like to congratulate grade 10 student Nikolas Shapka (École Notre Dame High School) on being selected to participate in Mr. Speaker’s MLA for a Day. This program took place May 6-8 at the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton.

The exciting three-day program provided an opportunity to experience a first-hand view of democracy at work in our province, to share ideas with other high school students across Alberta and make new friends. Transportation, accommodation and meals were provided to students free of charge through the program

Participants learned more about the role of an MLA and experienced what it is like to deal with diverse points of view when making decisions on provincial issues. Students had the chance to meet with Members of the Legislative Assembly, observe Session and debate on an issue in the provincial Chamber.

In addition to touring the grounds and building, participants visited the office of their MLA, attended a formal dinner hosted by the Speaker and participated in a variety of fun activities.
