Tales from the Timebox: January 16th, 2018

With the price of gas lately this really makes sense. Sometimes you can save a little gas if you have two kids, on two different teams, playing back to back on the road in the same town on the same day. Someone must have been thinking ahead and I think I may know who it was.  Micro Novice manager ‘Handy Andy’ Ballas’ sons, the Bruise Brothers, ‘Billy Bob’ and ‘Notorious Nolan’ playing back to back in Marwayne against the Dewberry/Marwayne teams.  The Micro Novice game was at 9:00 a.m., the Novice played right after at 10:30 a.m.  Both of our teams really competed well and stepped up to the challenge. The Micro Novice crew lost a close  battle 7 to 5. Jaxon ‘Magic ‘ Marcoux with two goals,  ‘Major Tom’ Melnyk , Ryder ‘ Rhino’ Malo , Theo ‘Long Horn’ Loughran with one goal each.
Right after that game, the Novice played with Kale ‘the Hawk’ Ockerman between the pipes, keeping a sharp eye on things and guarding the nest , winning 6 to 4. ‘Wyatt Earp’ Fontaine finding the twine with three bullets. Remington ‘Steel’ Reynolds firing his gun into the target with one, Brendon ‘Buzz Saw’ Kadutski swinging along chopping a path to score one and ‘Boe Dog’ Jackson getting out of the pound, off his leash on defense and making a run for it getting one too.
It was the only game here in town on Saturday afternoon, but it was quite the entertaining game! A terrific back and forth battle between the Frog Lake T Birds and our Peewee # 4 Avalanche. Tied at two each, after the first period, the Avalanche then seemed to run out of gas in the second period. The T Birds would pull away from them, the score 7 to 4 in favour of the T Birds after 40 minutes. Charged right up and coming out flying in the third the Avalanche gained the momentum making a real game of it pumping in four quick goals, the game coming right down to the final buzzer, the final score 9 to 8 for the T B who added two of their own in the third.
Kaleb ‘ Formula One’ Flamand in over-drive  on the straight away driving to the net with a hat trick, the run and gun ‘Top Gunner’ Crawford finding the top shelf for two and assisting on two others, ‘Bo Diddle’ Fontaine on the break-away with two goals and he also assisted  on two others. Getting right into the mix, Madden ‘ Mad Dog’ Flamand with a goal and three assists.  Dean ‘the Machine’ Ockerman, Seth ‘Motorman’ Morton and ‘Bazooka Joey’ Cardinal all with assists. Great forechecking up front by Brady the ‘Bionic Man’ Hymanyk and ‘Wild Wyatt’ Pavoll who kept the relentless pressure on the T Birds.
Goalie Kade ‘the Kid’ Fontaine facing 47 shots and that’s not counting the ones his defense stopped in their tracks or the shots they blocked.  ‘I get by with a little help from my friends’, Brendon ‘Blue Line’ Haesch-Baker , Gavin ‘Giver’ Kadutski, and Kaylee Radcliffe doing a terrific job on the D ”of clearing the traffic out from the danger zone.
Up in Bonnyville on Saturday, the Peewee tier # 1 team played a very good first half of the first period, leading the game for a short time, and even keeping it within reach after two periods. But the flood gates would open up in the third period,  the final score 12 to 4  for Bonnyville. Two goals each for ‘King Kong Konnor’ Poitras and ‘Mick Jager’ Fontaine. Cash ‘Paycheque’ Capjack and Sam ‘Spiderman’ Rogal getting in on the assists.
On Sunday, the tier # 1 team traveled to Meadow Lake and played their best game of the year, so far, according to their head coach James Capjack. He was very proud of them after the game. All twelve of his players showed up and played a full 60 minutes. This was quite an improvement from the last time these two teams met in Elk Point.
The Avalanche playing a very fast game, it was tied at 6 all well into the third  period. The final 8 to 6 is very respectable considering the level of competition. Landon ‘the Magnificent’ Malchowski has been moved back to defense and is doing a terrific job back there. Two goals for ‘King Kong Konnor’ plus an assist ‘Mick Jager’ getting one goal and three assists, ‘Paycheque’ with one goal and four assists, Ceajay ‘Greasy ‘ Quinney and Ryan ‘Ram Rod’ Cameron with one goal each. Landon ‘the Magnificent’ with two assists. It never went in, but Vaughn ‘the Vulture’  going coast to coast getting a great shot on net.
The Atoms played a close one here at home on Sunday against Wainwright, the final score 9 to 7. Braylee ‘Little Willy’ Lesyk and Evett ‘Snoopy’ Smereka with two goals each. Timmy ‘the Freight Train’ Cardinal rolling down the track, with a goal and an assist. ‘Cyclone Cole’ Pierce and Raif’ ‘Rug Rat’ Evans – Anderson with one goal each. Charlotte ‘Web Mail’ Henderson with two helpers, Braden ‘Pinball’ Pinette  and Kaysen ‘Dynamite ‘ DeMoissac also on the score sheet with one assist each.
Behind the mask goalie  Good Time Charlie’ Lesyk doing another outstanding job of keeping the rubber out.  ‘Good Time Charlie’ rarely  takes a day off when it comes to competing!
It wasn’t pretty, but a win, is a win, and still counts as two points when all is said and done. The Midget Avalanche played the Lac La Biche Clippers, here at home right after the Atom game on Sunday. Down by 5 to 3 at the half way point in the game, the boys would pick up their socks and give a better effort in the third period the final score 8 to 5 for the Avalanche. The game getting a little ugly in their third period too. There was plenty of penalties and goals to deal with keeping the time keepers busy and penalty box doors swinging.  Four goals and an assist for the highly talented team captain ‘Awesome Alex’ Hunter, Nick ‘Sparky’ Anderson lighting the lamp with two, he assisted on three others. Clap for the ‘ Wolfman’! Wolke ‘the Wolfman’ Cueva with a goal and an assist. Rugged D Man ‘Warrior Warren’ Ference adding a goal. The lanky ‘Big O’ Brody Odgaard, Austin ‘Astro ‘ Axley, Chase ‘Rink Rat’ Dorey, Abe ‘New Guy’ Neufield, and defenseman Hank ‘the Tank’ Rogal all on the game sheet with assists.
Sixteen candles for our grand daughter Heaven ‘the Brick House’ Colbourne who plays goalie for the Lakeland Jaguars Female Midget team. Her birthday was this past Sunday and she played in net against her old team mates from the Storm,  Jelena ‘Prime time’ Parr and Jace ‘Jack Hammer’ Weidmark who now play for the Vermilion Tigers. The Dewberry girls not being very nice to the ‘Brick House’ on her birthday,  the Tigers winning this one 3 to 1.
And down in Irma on Saturday  two other former Storm players, bantam aged  Jadey ‘ the Lady’ Capjack and Sydnee ‘ the Kid’ Crawford both played for the East Central North team  in their All Star game against the South, the South winning this one .
And now for the K.A. Campbell quote of the week, ” Sometimes when I make a good save I yell out, “Woo-Hoooo!” I’m not sure why, but it just feels good. I don’t think I scare anyone or freak anyone out when I do it. I just like to holler when I make a tough stop. ” – Marc-Andre Fleury
