Canadiens take Battle of the Lakeland Round 3

The third round of the Battle of the Lakeland series between the St. Paul Jr B Canadiens and the Cold Lake Jr B Ice took place on Saturday at Imperial Oil Place in Cold Lake. With the series tied at a game a piece, there was a lot of heat from both sides heading into the game.

“We don’t have a lot of room for error,” Head Coach of the Jr B Ice, Scott Hood said going into Saturday’s match-up against the Canadiens, “if we want to make big moves in the standings, we’re going to have to beat teams like St. Paul; tonight’s a big game.” After beating Onion Lake the night before, the Ice were primed to take on their rivals.

The Canadiens also came off a big win 16-2 over the Saddle Lake Warriors; they too were primed for action. Head Coach, Joe Young, “we need the two points. We’re excited for that game. Last time we were there, they played well and they beat us. They have a good hard working team and it’s always a good rivalry when we play them. We’re going to go in and play as hard as we can.”

The Ice opened up scoring in the game at 2:10 from  Conner Landry, with Evan Feehan & Brandyn Brockhoff collecting points for the helpers. The period was really stolen by Canadiens Captain, Dyson Roy, who took a game misconduct for goalie interference. Taking out the Ice’s starting goaltender, Nelson Schiiler at the 7 minute mark. Following the drama, the Canadiens took their time, but answered back before the end of the period, with a goal from  Bailey Lonsberry (Kyle Crawford assisted).

I was just floating around – typical me… I love to float around. The goalie chipped it up to me and I just rifled it in, like a rocket. I think it went right threw the net. – Conner Landry on his first period goal.

Among some intense battles Ice’s Noah Cook put in a go-ahead goal for the home team in the second; it was a 2-1 game headed into the third period. Canadiens veterans,  Braydon Burak and  Brodin Ference each had a goal in the third for a Canadiens 3-2 win in Cold Lake.

“That was our biggest game of the year and we didn’t show up to play,” Ice’s coach, Scott Hood says he was disappointed in the team’s performance. “Our goalie went down hurt and then Keaton (Boni) came in and played a great game to keep us in it. We just didn’t have that drive to battle St. Paul.”
