Cold Lake City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to support a grant application by Cold Lake First Nations.
“We are excited to see this project come from Cold Lake First Nations – our area is looking for good economic news, and tourism is one area we can grow,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “Our council is happy to lend the project our support and to find any opportunity to partner on projects that will help foster tourism in this beautiful region.”
Cold Lake was approached to write a letter of support for Cold Lake First Nations’ Tourism Business Opportunity Assessment project, which the Nation intends to submit for consideration under the third intake of the provincial Community and Regional Economic Support Program (CARES).
The project will focus on identifying and planning for tourism opportunities in the region, including opportunities for rental cabins and camping, and cultural tourism opportunities throughout the region.
“CARES projects are a small but good step in getting our region the plans we need to move forward and see some economic progress,” Copeland said. “The challenge will be to find the real dollars needed so that our communities can take advantage of the opportunities these plans identify.”
