On Nov. 18, 2017 at approximately 8:15 p.m., St. Paul RCMP responded to a robbery and assault outside of an apartment complex in St. Paul.
Further investigation revealed the male suspect allegedly used a firearm during the assault of a female victim and then robbed another victim of her vehicle at the same location. The victim that was assaulted suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. No one else was injured. Police patrolled the area for the vehicle but it was not located.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., police responded to a report that the suspect male was seen entering into a separate apartment complex in St. Paul. Due to safety concerns, occupants of the complex were evacuated while police secured the area. Police Dog Services (PDS) along with the Emergency Response Team (ERT) – Edmonton responded to assist with the investigation when the male would not exit an apartment located in the complex.
At 4:30 a.m., the Emergency Response Team entered the complex and were able to arrest the suspect without incident. A firearm was seized by police and no one else was injured.
Bryce Earl Brertton, a 30-year-old from Goodfish Lake was charged with 20 Criminal Code offences which include:
- Robbery with a firearm
- Pointing a firearm
- Careless use of a firearm
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
- Assault with a weapon
- Assault causing bodily harm
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm
- Uttering threats
- Theft under $5000.00
- Possession of a weapon while prohibited
- Obstruction/Resist a police officer (X2)
- Fail to comply with Recognizance (X8)
At the time of his arrest, Brertton was wanted on eight additional warrants for various offences in 2016 – 2017. He was remanded into custody and will be appearing in St. Paul Provincial Court on Nov, 23, 2017 via CCTV.
Police do not believe this was a random incident.
As this matter is now before the courts no further information will be provided.
