Sr Pontiacs bring home two road wins

The Bonnyville Sr Pontiacs opened up their regular season on the road with a pair of wins, against Westlock and Morinville. Assistant coach, for the team, Corey Wandler says the team has a great core group of guys returning that’ll help lead the club to host provincials this spring.

“Feels good. You always want to come out of the gate and get a win. We certainly did that Friday against Westlock and Sunday against Morinville.” Wandler says it felt especially good with Sunday’s win because the club has a rivalry built over the years with Morinville, “we faced them last year in the semis. It’s always a tough place to play, in their rink, so it’s nice to kick things off with a win.”

Wandler says the club relies on players to be able to juggle personal, professional, and hockey lives. There are no cuts, if you want to be on the ice, you are. “We’re not a junior A team or anything. No one’s been cut, so far,” Wandler laughs at the unlikelihood of cuts, “we do want to build a team that’s going to be able to complete, not just for provincials, but for leagues, as well. We have a lot of strong players and should be a lot better this year, than last year.”

“We have a pretty good returning core, from last year, that we’ve built the team around. We’ve added some defensemen that have come in to help us this year,” some of the players Wandler highlights are; Craig Wowk (formerly of Cold Lake Jr B Ice) and Nick Scott (formerly of Bonnyville Jr A Pontiacs). Devon Kalinsky, Mike Desjarlais, and Lucas Isley are the veteran core that’ll help shape the team.

“We have a pretty good mix of guys.” The Sr Pontiacs will host their home opener on November 4th. Watch live coverage on Lakeland Connect’s Facebook Page thanks to Rapid Response and Thinkwerx.
