Ice melt in shootout against Tigers

The Cold Lake Jr B Ice traveled to Vermilion on Saturday to take on the Tigers. After a poor start the team battled hard to tie it up, but could not take the win in extra time, forcing a shootout. The Ice could not break the Tiger’s barrier at the crease and fell 3-2 in the shootout. Head Coach, for the Jr B Ice, Scott Hood, says the club will have to be more consistent in their efforts.

“It’s the same, you have to work hard every night and work the full 60,” Hood explains it was a tough start in Vermilion as the Tigers took the lead in the first. Carter Myhovich opened scoring at 9:15 in the first from Brayden Wilson & Ryan VanGenderen. The goal was followed up less than a minute later from Evan Bardoel at 10:05, with Lucas Dennill & Maguire Blair taking the helpers.

2-0 for the Tigers heading into the second, “we battled back pretty hard,” explains Coach Hood. It was a real effort from Jean-Guy Boisvert who put in a pair of goals in the second to tie up the game. Shane Whitney , Troy Odgaard & Nelson Schiiler all got assists in the period.

“It’s been our downfall all year, just scoring goals,” as Hood explains the team stayed in the game for the remainder; however could not find the back of the next. The game went into to overtime and eventually a shootout, where the Ice still struggled to find mesh, with 50 shots on net. The Tigers took the game with a 3-2 shootout win.

“You have to play your full 60 and play hard every night. There’s no taking a night off and winning in the Jr. B.” This weekend the club has two tough games coming up against top-of-the-league Wainwright and new to the Northeast Jr B Hockey League, the Lac La Biche Clippers. “We don’t want to put ourselves any deeper than we already are.” Hood anticipates the club will have some good practices this week and put up a healthy fight against the Bisons and Clippers.

The Ice will travel to Wainwright on Friday and welcome the Bison to Imperial Oil Place on Saturday. Then they are on the road again on Sunday to face the Clippers.
