Wind… The Lakeland’s bitter enemy as winter approaches. On Thursday October 5, The Cold Lake Royals visited Holy Rosary in Lloydminster. The teams last played on September 22, in a game Holy Rosary won 33-22.
Flat at kickoff
The bus ride to Lloydminster seemed to have zapped the Royals of their energy. The Royals differed the kick-off, and allowed Holy Rosary to fight the wind in the first quarter. The Raiders managed one touchdown in the quarter. The second quarter was a different beast. The Royals were pinned by the wind. The Raiders continued to pile points on.
In the second half, the Royals played their 19 players against the Raiders young guys. The game was closer in the second half, and Royals Coach Kelly Johnson saw some promising signs. The final score in the game was 42-15 for Holy Rosary.
“We kind of just got pinned down in the second quarter. Wasn’t healthy being pinned like that. We just couldn’t get out.” Coach Kelly Johnson says, “In the second half they started playing their backups. We had a lot more success with that. It was a better second half for us.”
Home for playoffs
The Cold Lake Royals will be home this weekend. The Wheatland Football League playoffs begin this week across the Lakeland. the St. Paul Lions will pay a visit to Soholt Field. The game goes Saturday, October 14 at 1 p.m.
“They’re doing really well in the other division there. it’s going to be a tough game, but hopefully we get healthy, and hopefully we’re ready to go. Playing the Lloydminster teams and Bonnyville I think has helped our physical side.” Coach Johnson says.
