Donating hair for the cause during the Scott MacDonald Memorial

The Scott MacDonald Memorial is set for September 16, 2017 at Walsh Field. The day is packed with football, but goes far beyond the gridiron. This year a female bantam football will be making history during the annual head shave. The head shave raises money for local families dealing with cancer, the local cancer clinic, and the Scott MacDonald Memorial Scholarship. There will be a silent auction running all day at Walsh Field.

Cassie Christians plays bantam football with the Bonnyville Bandits. She is in her second year with the team. Watching the head shave last year (2016) motivated her to take her off at this year’s event. Alongside Cassie will be football mom Serena Critch. Serena is the mother of four football playing boys, one of which includes track and field standout Duncan Cirtch.

“Well, she’s extremely passionate about this sport. She has just an amazing love for this game, and she really wanted to support it in a special way. After seeing it last year because it was her first year, [she said] next year I’m going to donate my hair. It goes to a good cause. We’ve always donated our hair in our family. She said this is a great event she can basically generate funds, and donate her hair all in one.” Skye Chirstians, Cassie’s mom, explains.

For Serena Critch, this is something she’s always wanted to do.

“For me personally, I started teasing my husband, and he issued a challenge. I went fine, I’m going to do it. Anybody who knows my husband will get a kick out of it.” Critch says.

There will be three games on September 16. The Renegades kick off at 2 p.m. vs Cold Lake. The Bandits have a 4:30 p.m. kick off vs Wainwright. The night game features the Bonnyville Voyageurs facing the Cold Lake Royals under the lights at 7:30 p.m. All games will be played at Walsh Field.
