Who Wants to Play a little Football?!

It’s starting to feel a lot like fall when I get up in the mornings and it’s dark and dewy outside; also in the evenings when you need a little jacket to take the chill off as the sun goes down a little after 8 pm. The good thing about the early nights and cooler weather, fall means football. The CFL started a while ago, in fact they are half way through the season. The NFL is getting ready to kick off, and so is the minor football in St. Paul.
A number of Elk Point boys are returning to play football in St. Paul; including, on the Lions senior team, Hank ‘the Tank’ Rogal , ‘Silent Sam’ Henderson , ‘Ty Cobb’ Smereka, Wolke ‘Wolfman’ Cueva and Lyon Cueva. On the Bengals junior team we have 3rd year players, Odin ‘the Wall’ Smith who was named one of the 5 permanent captains for the year. Also in their third year we have ‘Danny Boy’ Cardinal and Charlie ‘Chuckles’ Rogal. Second year player, Chayse ‘Big Popa’ Pankiw, and first year players ‘Bazooka Joey’ Cardinal and Keanyn Bourget.
Football, like almost all sports, is starting earlier than it did when I played in high school. Back then we never started practicing until the first day of school. Now football has a spring camp to evaluate the players long before the season got started. The regular football season started on Monday August 21st, with practicing happening every day since. It was a rude awakening for the boys who haven’t done a whole lot this summer, as far an exercise goes; especially, the first practice which saw a number of them kneeling on the sidelines wishing they had taken the coaches advise at the spring camp and did a little jogging and a few push up every day or two. Some of them threatening to quit after the first rigorous workout; but sure enough they all returned the next afternoon and every one since . It looks like they are starting to get into shape.
The season openers for both teams will be at home at the Regional High School, the Lions on Friday September the 8th at 5pm and the Bengals going the next afternoon Saturday September the 9th at 1pm.
And now for the K.A. Campbell quote of the week. – ‘Winners, I am convinced, imagine their dreams first. they want it with all their heart and expect it to come true.’ – Joe Montana- NFL quarterback
