Elk Point’s Nicholas Anderson

You could say Nicholas Anderson’s golf game is on the right course. The 16 year-old Elk Point product has been taking golf seriously for a year and a half. His first year was filled with learning curves, but he has shown steady progress.

Multi-Sport commitment

Anderson loves to split his year into two definitive seasons. As soon as the golf course opens up in late spring, Anderson heads out and starts swinging. As soon as there is ice in the arenas, you can bet Nicholas is ready to strap on his skates.

Entering the summer, he was coming off a provincial run with the Elk Point Avalanche. Elk Point hosted the Midget D tournament from March 23-26. The team went 2-2 in the tournament. Anderson excelled in the tournament putting up five points in three games played.

Junior Open

Nicholas recently won the 2017 Bonnyville Junior Open. The Open was held on August 10th, and was an incredible showing for Anderson. He had enetered the 2016 Junior Open, and had a rough go in his first tournament. This year things worked out well for the 16 year-old.

“Last year I payed in it, and didn’t do the best. I wanted to join it again and see if I could do better. Obviously I did.” Anderson quickly recounts.

Alberta Indigenous Games

This past week, Nicholas was at the Alberta Indigenous Games competing in golf. On the front nine, he worked his way to a +1. The course record sits at a +1 for 18 holes. Things were looking good headed into the back nine, but things got away from Anderson a bit. He shot a +4 on the back nine to finish the tournament at +5. That was good enough for a three stroke lead on second place, and a gold medal.

“I had three birdies, and played alright. I finished five over. The course record there is a one over, so I played pretty good.” Anderson says, “[I won] a circle of courage award. I won it for shooting the best score out of all the categories. There’s three categories, Intermediate (Birth Year 1999-2001), Senior (Birth year 1997-1998), and Junior (Birth year 2002+).”

Keeping at it

Nicholas Anderson has no plans to get off the links any time soon. He will be a part of F.G. Miller High school’s golf team alongside Parker Allen. He will also be playing with the Elk Point Midget Avalanche this winter.
