Emergency Services Golf Tournament

The Town of Elk Point is entering a team in the Emergency Services Golf Tournament on

August 25, bringing the Town’s total donation to the event, including entry fees, to $900. As Councillor Lorne Young explained, “STARS supports us big time” and entering the tournament is a way to raise money and awareness for the fire department and STARS.

 

Municipal Election – October 16

Residents of Elk Point wishing to run for Town Council must submit their nomination papers IN PERSON to the Town office on Monday, September 18 between 10:00 am and noon. The election will be held October 16, with the advance poll on October 11. Nomination papers and other information are available through the Town office, or online.

 

Tax Recovery Sale

A Tax Sale is scheduled for September 20, 2017, at which time 35 condos, two houses, two lots, and a hotel will be auctioned to recover taxes unpaid from previous years.

August 31 is the magic date for 2017 municipal tax payments to be made without penalty. As of September 1, a 12% charge will be added.

CAO Ken Gwozdz reports that the Town has done very well in operating within its budget, and has not incurred any interest charges this year.

 

Excavator is Great!

The purchase of an excavator in the spring has paid off for the Town. It was used extensively in removing trees after the July 13 storm, has been used for digging trenches following waterline breaks, and has been utilized by non-profits for work that needed to be done. Council extends a big THANK YOU to Jay Duffee and the Public Works team for cleaning up the many trees that were damaged in the storm.

 

Crosswalk Lights Coming

Alberta Transportation plans to install a crosswalk light and signage this fall at the intersection of 50th Avenue and Highway 41.

 

Drivers Needed

The town provides transportation for seniors to medical appointments in distant towns/cities, but is short on drivers for the HandiBus. For information on licence requirements and time commitments, contact Parrish Tung via the town office, at 780 724 3810.
