Project estimated to cost over $600K

Council for the Town of St. Paul has approved $681,750 to complete the rehabilitation project on 55th avenue between 51st street and 54th street. Luckily, the Town is able to move some money from a grant they received into the project, so it will not affect their budget.

Chief Administrative Officer, Holly Habiak, explained to Council at Monday’s regular meeting that she had contacted the Gas Tax Funding (GSF) grant administration, “they said we are able to reallocate the funds to this project.” The Town was successful in securing $1,041,000.00 in GSF grants. That money was intended for the 57th avenue rehabilitation project. However, with 55th avenue being a priority Council saw it fit to reallocate the funds into the 55th avenue project.

The water and sewer pipes under that stretch of road have become very worn over the years and burst, causing the water to be turned off on the street for an extended period of time a few weeks ago. While working to restore the water and fix the problem, it was discovered the pipes are no longer up to standards and there are even some abandoned pipes that were not on the GIS mapping.

To get the pipes up to today’s standards and ensure the longevity of the area, the Town is looking at approximately $300,000 to fix the water pipes and $250,000 for the sanitary sewer pipes. A total cost of $681,750.00 has been proposed and approved by Council. Any money left over from the GSF grant will be used for another project; such as the 57th avenue rehabilitation project.
