On August 9th, at approximately 7:00 pm, the Cold Lake RCMP were called to Sobey’s Liquor Store on 50th avenue, downtown Cold Lake. “The employee reported that a male had walked into the store and stole  approximately -100 worth of alcohol,” S/Sgt with the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment, Jeremie Landry says some of the alcohol was recovered prior to the male leaving the store.

“RCMP arrived and upon arrival, the suspect ran on foot,” S/Sgt Landry explains the suspect wasn’t immediately apprehended at that time. The officers patrolled the area, “during this patrol, the suspect returned to the store and tried to purchase alcohol, this time.” The suspect was refused and left the store.

He was located a short time later, confirms S/Sgt Landry, “the officers located him sitting on the sidewalk by the Best Western hotel. He was advised that he was under arrest. He attempted to run from the officer, but was quickly apprehended during a very short foot pursuit.”

31 year old Cody Chief, of the Cold Lake First Nations, has been charged with resisting arrest, theft under $5,000 (for shoplifting of the alcohol) and another charge of resisting arrest (for the second attempt to flee from officers). Chief has appeared before the Justice of the Peace and was released on a $1,500 no-cash recognizance, pending his first court appearance.

Chief will be in court on August 23rd at 10:00 in Cold Lake Provincial Court.
