Crime has been Steady in the City; down in Rural Cold Lake
“The total criminal code, for the City of Cold Lake, is down by 0.4 percent,” S/Sgt. Jeremie Landry for the Cold Lake RCMP Detachment says crime has been steady. When comparing stats from January to July, 2016 to the same time period in 2017, there’s only been a difference of six criminal code investigates. “We’ve had six less criminal code investigations for 2017.”
“Where we’ve seen more of an impact is in the rural. We’ve had a total criminal code decrease of 9.5 percent,” the Cold Lake RCMP are responsible for responding and patrolling the rural areas around Cold Lake, west to Ardmore. “Person crime is down by 8.8 percent and property crime is down by 8.5 percent,” confirms S/Sgt Landry. Persons crime includes acts such as harassment and assault, whereas property crime includes theft and break and enters.
“Property crime is a big [issue], especially in the rural areas. It’s been causing a lot of people frustrations. So it’s a positive to [see less incidents],” year-to-date, there have been 209 criminal code investivgations in the rural areas. S/Sgt Landry confirms that last year during the same time there was 231. “It’s almost a ten percent drop.”
