Elk Point gears up for Canada Day celebrations.
Elk Point is known throughout the region and across Alberta as having one of the best Canada Day celebrations. The 150th Birthday of our nation will be no different. The day is full of fun activities, sights and opportunities to bump into old friends and family.
The day starts with a pancake breakfast at the library, from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. Reminder to anyone participating in the parade, line up is 8:30 – 9:30 am. You can get your float in line and then leave for some pancake. There will be no judging of late entries and registration is highly recommended. You can contact Diane at 780-646-0648 to register. Another thing to note is that for all entries you must line up using the west entrance of Railway avenue – by the fire hall. Do NOT enter from the east off Highway 41 near Tags. Bikes are to line up at 10:30 am. Parade starts at 11:00 am.
Lakeland Realty is once again serving ice cream from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. This is something Lakeland Realty has done for a number of years and is a huge hit. ((PS it’s FREE)). So grab a cold & tasty treat and find a great spot on the parade route.
There will be lots of options for lunch, but I recommend the perogy dinner put on by St. Vladimire’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. They serve from 11:00 am-1:00 pm at the Senior’s Centre.
The Town of Elk Point has sponsored an amazing stage show this year. Opening Ceremonies at 12:00 pm at the Canada Day Stage with the singing of OCanada, followed by some opening addresses from local dignitaries. Followed by the first of two shows by Greg T, illusionist & magician. After Greg T, there will be a quick Dog Agility demonstration by the local 4-H Club and at 1:30 pm, then The Camp Fire Kings take the stage. They are a really fun duo that play just about every song you can think of! They take on the spot requests or you can get a song in early by visiting them online, thecampfirekings.com
. There will be a break at 2:30 pm for the serving of the Canada Day cake thanks to the Royal Purple. The Camp Fire Kings will take the stage again and their show runs until 4:00 pm, followed by some fiddlers and into another performance by Greg T. At 5:00 Jorja Theriault will take the stage with friends and we’ll have some other local performers to end the outdoor stage show.
Also happening near the stage area will be Bouncy Houses & kids’s activities; including a passport to fun challenge thanks to Early Childhood Development Committee. There will be a Papillion the Clown on site, as well as a face painter. The Bouncy House are open from 12:30 – 5:00 pm thanks to the Elk Point Lions and Canadian Natural. There will be Teen Games and a Dunk Tank to benefit Minor Ball thanks to the Community Lions and TD Bank.
FG Miller High will be open for the Biggest High School Reunion Ever! We encourage everyone to track down the old classmates and schedule a time to meet up at the school between 1:00 and 3:00 pm. There will be yearbooks and photos on display, as well as a professional photographer to take photos of reunited classmates on the steps of the school. Please rendezvous on your own.
At 5:00 pm the Community Dinner will begin service at the AG Ross Arena. It’s catered by PS Catering and includes beef on a bun, coleslaw, beans, pasta salad and dessert. There will also be a special performance from the Ukrainian Dancers at 6:00 pm during supper at the arena. All for only $15 for adults, $12 for teens 12-17 years old and $8 for kids 11-7 years old. Kids 6 and under are FREE! You can pay at the door or purchase tickets in advance to make things a little easier. Tickets are available at the Town of Elk Point Office. . Dinner serves ends at 7:00 pm.
Door open for the Community Dance at the arena at 9:00 pm. It is an all ages, licenced event, sponsored by Weatherford and Servus Credit Union. The Town of Elk Point has sponsored a really fun, high energy band, Mid Life Crisis to play! They are the type of band that’ll have you dancing and singing along – all night long! . Please note there are only 350 tickets available, so do not hesitate! All money raised from the event will benefit the Curling Club. There will also be a designated driver service sponsored by B&R Eckel’s Transport.
