Tales from the Doug Out: June 20th, 2017

On game days coaches don’t need the extra stress. There’s enough decisions to make about the line up, who will pitch and catch and if we will even have enough players to field a team; let alone worry about if it will rain. Game day decisions for the head coach are always difficult with this wonderful wet weather!
Twice this past week we had to cancel games scheduled, one Peewee boys game on Tuesday night and three of the girls teams on Wednesday nights, all called off due to threatening thunderstorms. It’s a tough call to make, and if you call it off chances are the game may never happen. The Lakeland League season is so short that trying to fit in a game this late in the season is almost impossible. The biggest problem last week was that most of the teams playing had two hours to travel to get here and would have to leave right after school. That means, the decision had to be made by 3pm and it’s a long drive back home if not be able to play. A 50/ 50 call, and as it turns out both nights the games in fact could have been played, the sun did shine after 6pm. If only we had a crystal ball!
The Peewee girls Pumas did play on Monday night a defeated Elizabeth Metis Settlement by a few runs and didn’t need their last at bats. Jadey “the Lady” Capjack behind the plate doing a terrific job catching, she has a strong arm for the throw to the bases.  Pitcher Mykaela Verenka started the game for the first two innings and was getting help from her fielders for the outs. Then Paige Skarsen coming in for two innings. She has a very wicked windmill, low fastball and was tough for any of the girls to catch up to get a hit; most of them going down swinging or standing amazed at the speed. Closing the game, pitching for her first time ever, Jorja Theriault, who is celebrating her birthday this coming Thursday.  “Jorja Girl” did in the end, with the help of some fine fielding, shut down Elizabeth.
The Peewee boys AA provincial team had a very good weekend and won all three of their games in playing in St. Albert. On Saturday, they defeated Grand Prairie 12 to 2 in their first game. Their second game against Slave Lake the boys hammered them big time, 44 to 4. Kobe “the Cobra” Warawa, Jaden “Jet Stream” Van Maarion, and Andon “Ace” Ballas all bashed the ball for multiple extra base hits.
On Sunday they played the Parkland Twins from Spruce Grove in a much closer game. After being down early 6 to 2, they battled back and pulled off a 16 to 15 win with the help of the “Ace” closer, Andon Ballas. The team with a 6 and 0 record for the month of June will now sit and wait to be re-tiered for next month.
Our Mosquitoes played five games, in a tournament in Eastborne on the weekend, losing out in the A final to St. Lina. Some awesome pitching by Vaughn “the Vulture” Ockerman and Sam “Spiderman” Rogal,. Spiderman was teamed up on a play at home and third to make a double play. Janka Evans Anderson hit a nice double to center field. Tray Thomas and Chevy Calliou with some nice hits to drive in runs. Kaysen DeMossiac getting the call up from the rookie farm team, got on base almost every time he came to the plate.
Our Midget AA provincial players Kaiden “K Rock” Evans Anderson and Braden “Magnet” Fairbairn both did really well at the plate in Bonnyville winning two out of three games. “K Rock” pitched the final two innings on Sunday. He also got credit with a double play on a hot liner at short stop. The boys are doing really well, considering they are first year players going against 18 and some even 19 year old men.
And a big happy anniversary going out today to our good friends Keith and Sue Campbell. And now from the man himself, ,celebrating his anniversary, it’s the K.A. Campbell quote of the week. ‘we always have time enough, if we will but use it aright.’ – Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
