Pumas Dominate the Field

Tales from the Doug Out: June 7th, 2017

“The female has no place in baseball, except to the degradation of the game.” That was the view reported by the St. Louis Globe way back on April 11 1886. One day, I’m sure, they may be playing in the Majors. But not back when baseball was just getting started. You wouldn’t think that way if you had seen the way our girls teams played this past week. They played great and won a lot of ball games.
This past Monday night the Bantam girls defeated Vermilion. Starting pitching for the first two innings and throwing nothing but strikes was Katelyn Boratynec. After her two innings, Chyanne Fisher took over for two innings and did the same. Tenille Ballas pitching for one inning, setting up the big closer for the last two innings,  Keanna Radcliffe who totally shut them down with her wicked windmill (no one could even come close to touching her low fast ball with some great movement).  Behind the plate doing the catching duties, and awesome job of it was the tandem of  “Raging Paige” Henderson and Erin “Rock Star” Duffee . On first base  Georgia “Gorgeous” Bendixen was  snagging all the sharply hit balls coming her way.
The Peewee Pumas also won this past Wednesday night. Mykaela Verenka pitching the first inning then Paige Skarsen pitched the rest of the game, both of them doing amazing, getting 1, 2, 3 out with the help of the infielders and outfields catching pop fly’s and making ground ball plays. Brooklyn Gochko driving in Mykaela Verenka the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Squirt girls entered into the Vermilion tournament on Saturday defeating Vermilion 16 to 6 after four innings, then losing a close game to Marwayne 14 to 12. They went on to win their last game against Kitscoty 14 to 8. Great pitching by Chloe “Mouse” Bendixen,  Ezra Wade, Rylee  “the Rocket” Warawa and Lilly Swedgen.
Our mighty mites Puma team is really coming along too, they also won this past week too. “Hurricane Kayl” Warawa  was throwing straight strikes. Sam “the Spiderman” Rogal was lights out, striking out three in a row, sending the mosquitoes #2 Sox team to the bottom of the seventh where, Cash “Paycheque” Capjack cranked his second  home run of the game to cash  in the winning runs this past Tuesday night, for the Sox defeating St Paul 12 to 8.
Another win for the Bantam boys who defeated the Pierceland Pirates Thursday night, here a home. Up on the mound getting the call to start the game was “Ty Cobb” Smereka hurling the ball for the Sox and doing a terrific job. “Ty Cobb” also smacked a big double to center field . Pitching in relief, “Hammering Hank” Rogal had some great heat and a terrific curve ball that really fooled a few guys and gave them a chair. “Hammering Hank” also spanked the ball a few times to get on base. Doing middle relief Evan “Bat man” Ockerman. (He’s got great stuff too for a young fella.) Coming in to close Charlie “Chuckles” Rogal, was chucking the ball right down town and shut them down! “Chuckles” hammered a huge triple in this one too. Playing in his first year of baseball , Zack Tchir hit a single right down the line bringing in some runs, not bad at all for a guy just starting to play at bantam ball. Colton “Colt 45” Van Maarion is another one who just started and is a natural behind to plate catching. Really nice when you’re the umpire and the catcher doesn’t let any balls slip through to hit you!! Ouch that hurt…. with a few adjectives added !!
And now for the K.A. Campbell quote of the week. “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” – Theodore Roosevelt
