Four People Died in Collision Outside Elk Point

Elk Point RCMP Investigate Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision on Highway 29

 

UPDATE:

On May 24, 2017 at approximately 6:40 p.m., Elk Point RCMP with assistance from St. Paul RCMP responded to a serious collision on Highway 29 between Range Road 72 and Range Road 73.

Investigation has determined that a west bound Ford truck had pulled out to pass another vehicle when it collided head-on with an east bound Dodge truck. Both vehicles sustained extensive front end damage and the engineered life space of both vehicles was compromised.

The driver and sole occupant of the Dodge pickup, a 64 year old male from St. Paul was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the Ford pickup, a 42 year old male from Cold Lake was pronounced dead on scene. Two passengers in the Ford, a 46 year old male from Elk Point, and a 28 year old male from Elk Point also succumbed to their injuries on scene. A third passenger in the Ford truck, a 39 year old male was transported to Edmonton where he remains being treated for unknown injuries.

Traffic was diverted both east and west bound on Highway 29 for several hours but has since re-opened.

Weather was not a factor in this collision but was noted to be rain and high winds at the time of collision. The collision remains under investigation with the assistance of an RCMP Collision Reconstructionist.

The RCMP would like to send its condolences to the families during this difficult time.

At approximately 6:40 p.m. Elk Point RCMP with assistance from St. Paul RCMP responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 29 between Range Road 72 and Range Road 73 involving four fatalities.

Preliminary investigation revealed two pickup trucks collided head-on. Both drivers were pronounced dead on scene. Two passengers in one of the vehicles also succumbed to their injuries on scene. A third passenger in that same pickup was transported to hospital with injuries of an unknown severity at this time.

Highway 29 east and west bound at this location is impassable and traffic is being diverted. There is no time line for traffic to return to normal. RCMP are asking motorists to avoid the area.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation and all factors are being considered. An RCMP Collision Reconstructionist is on scene to assist with the investigation.

The names of the deceased will not be released.
