Penguins and Rebels Rugby Teach Kids the Ropes

Collaboration between Cold Lake Rugby and Big Brothers Big Sisters

On April 22nd, the Cold Lake Penguins and Rebels Rugby clubs hosted kids from Big Brothers Big Sisters at the Cold Lake High School gym. The kids got a chance to learn a little bit about rugby from local players.

“We’re trying to have more events like this. These events help the kids that are on the wait list. They get involved and feel like they are a part of something bigger than themselves.” Donna Benoit, Program Facilitator with Big Brothers Big Sisters, says.

The event ran for about an hour and a half. Before things got going, the volunteers and kids sat down for a lunch together. With lunch complete, the kids got a chance to try several drills instructed by Rebels Coach Jared Nichol.

“One of our players is a big brother, and his wife is a big sister. They came forward and said it’s a great cause, and asked what we could do. So now we’re hosting this event.” Dave Brown, President of Cold Lake Rugby, explains.

The next event for Big Brothers Big Sisters is their Bowl for Kids’ Sake. The event takes place this weekend, April 28 and April 29 at Marina Bowling Centre in Cold Lake.
