RCMP Win 2017 Cold Lake Charity Hockey Game

Team Fire-Rescue Wins Novice Game

It may be late April, but there was still a score to be settled on the ice. Last year, the RCMP won the inaugural Charity Hockey Game. This year Team Fire-Rescue was looking to even the series at one apiece.

To start the night, coaches from the respective sides took to the bench to coach local novice hockey players. Team Fire-Rescue scored a couple of goals in the early going, and put the game away late. Final score was 4-1 for Novice Team Fire-Rescue.

“We’re going to go with speed and finesse. Maybe rub them out a bit in the corners.” Mayor Craig Copeland said of Team Fire-Rescue’s game plan.

The highly anticipated game got underway with warmups at 6:30. Team Fire-Rescue took to the ice wearing their fire helmets, and Team RCMP hit the ice wearing their Campaign hats.

The first period was a feeling out process. Both teams traded chances, and cashed in a couple of times. Team RCMP would take a 3-2 lead into the dressing room after the first period. In the first intermission both teams took their crack at holding Cold Lake’s hardest shot. Team RCMP member Charles Gill won the honour with a 90 MPH shot.

“We only have two lines. So fatigue is setting in. Overall, we have a very strong team. We were definitely pushing their defense and got three by them.” S/Sgt Jeremie Landry said.

Things would get away from Team Fire-Rescue in the second period. They would allow five goals in the period, and end up down 8-2 going into the third period.

Having some fun

The third period started with some antics. Team Fire-Rescue brought out a large inflatable donut to shake Team RCMP’s focus. Only one officer bit, but he wholeheartedly tackled the donut. With the bit of fun out of the way the game resumed. Fans in Imperial Oil Place got a bit of a laugh, when Team RCMP got a hold of the jumbotron to take shots at Team Fire-Rescue.

The final score was 9-5 for Team RCMP. Team RCMP lifted the trophy for the second straight year.
