Charity hockey match takes to the ice for second year.

On Saturday Imperial Oil Place will host the 2nd Annual RCMP vs Fire Rescue Charity Hockey Match in benefit of Victim Services. Last year, Team RCMP took home the cup, which is still displayed proudly at the Cold Lake Detachment. S/Sgt and captain of Team RCMP, Jeremie Landry, says Fire Rescue is going to have to step it up to get that cup out of their hands.

“Last year we took the cup, our team is very similar to last year,” other than two members it is the same group, making Landry confident that they will put up some tough competition for team Fire Rescue. “Last year, in order to make it close, we did have to ease up in the third period; because it was 8-0 going into the third period,” Landry smiles recalling last year’s big win for his team.

“I would like to speak to the misconception going around that we brought in ringers,” captain Landry says that Team RCMP is made up entirely of RCMP members, from Cold Lake, “in fact, it was [Fire Rescue] that had to bring in players. They brought in Cold Lake City Peace Officer, Robert Mercier.”

New this year is the Hardest Shot, “anyone can register, at the Cold Lake Detachment, it’s $20 and you get three opportunities to shoot the hardest shot.” There will be an RCMP member with a radar gun recording the shots before the game. The top three hardest shooters will be invited back during the first intermission to see who has the Hardest Shot. “Anyone who wants to beef up their online dating profile,” laughs Landry, “what a great accomplishment to add to your profile; Cold Lake’s Hardest Shot.” The preliminary rounds will take place from 4:00-4:45 pm at Imperial Oil Place.

Following the Hardest Shot preliminary rounds, the Cold Lake Novice teams will take the ice at 5:00 pm to play out a fun battle with Landry leading one team as the coach. Fire Chief, Jeff Fellow will be the coach of the opposing team; just added the fuel to the fire and ensuring that rivalry is nice and hot for game time.

Warm up for the game will follow the Novice teams at 6:30 pm, with puck drop at 7:00 pm. There will be loads of fun for the crowd, intermission games and entertainment; as well as a 50/50 draw.
