Two Gold Medals at Alberta Native Hockey Provincial Championships

The Provincial Championships were held April 6-9 in Edmonton. In total 250 teams from communities all over Alberta competed for the chance to bring home hardware. Two gold medals, and two banners for the rafters came back to Elizabeth Metis Settlement.

EMS Midget Oilers

The Midget Oilers had a six game schedule for a chance to win gold. With 24 teams in the division, they went 3-0 in round robin play to advance to bracket play. Saturday the 8th, saw the team capture two 4-2 victories (over Sucker Lake and Sturgeon Lake) to advance to the gold medal game on Sunday. They would take a tight score 3-2 over Kikino to capture gold and the midget boys banner. The Midget Oilers outscored their opponents 42-7 in the six games.

Elizabeth Northen Selects Pee-Wee Girls

The Northen Selects faced a four game schedule before advancing to the gold medal game. They went 4-0 with wins over Calling Lake, Alexis, Stoney Sioux, and Edmonton. In the final they faced Enoch, and took a 6-1 final to win gold and a banner. The Northern Selects put up a +53 goal differential in the tournament, and allowed only one goal.

Jessica Desjarlais, with the teams, says “We would like to give a nod to our sponsors and to our team managers, Chris Desjarlais and Kelly Steinhauer, and the coaches and trainers who made it all happen for the kids.”
