Elk Point is welcoming back all Crusaders!

The Elk Point Canada Day Committee is well into planning the celebrations for Canada’s 150th birthday. “We really want this to be a town event and there’s no way for that to be complete without all our old classmates,” Rec Coordinator for the Town of Elk Point Jena Colbourne says that’s where the idea of a reunion came from. “We want to see how many former Crusaders will come back to town.”

Elk Point is known throughout Alberta as being the best place to celebrate Canada Day, “like the Town slogan, it’s ‘The Right Place to Be’,” laughs Jena. “We really put a lot of thought and work into the celebrations, but try to keep the small town feel of it all.” The Canada Day Committee is going all out with the theme, “even holding a high school style talent show; winner takes all the glory.” The talent show will be open to all ages and talents, “we really hope to get some unique entries, some really fun performances and unique talents. I’m actually already working on my performance. I won’t give away too many details, but I can tell you I want that trophy.” The winner will receive what Jena describes as a “massive trophy”. There will be a fan voting element to show and really anything goes!

We’ll have our usually really fun family games throughout the afternoon and a great stage performance on the Canada Day stage. There will be local fiddlers, singers, pow wow dancers, and acclaimed magician/illusionist Craig T. “He’ll actually be doing two shows. A G version in the day for the families, then a PG-13 version a little later on. Both will be fine to bring the kids, but the later show will be slightly more adult focused.” There will be bouncy houses, carnival games, food and business vendors on the grounds. “The business vendor section is absolutely free. We want to give small local businesses the opportunity to showcase their products,” Jena says you can email recreation@elkpoint.ca if you’re interested in being a business or food vendor.

Along with an awesome talent show, the evening will feature a family dinner/dance. “We have a fantastic band, Mid Life Crisis booked. They are simply amazing. They play a great mix of rock and some rock-country; they really know how to jam and get the crowd going; one of my favourite local bands,” says Jena. The dance will be full of reunion fun, “we’re thinking of calling up all the couples who met in high school and then got married for a special Prom King and Queen dance. We’ll also have a photo booth with fun Crusader memorabilia and a huge yearbook for everyone to sign.”

“We are in need of volunteers and there are great money-making opportunities for non-profits,” Jena says anyone interested can contact her via email recreation@elkpoint.ca.

“The reunion aspect of the day is really a lot of fun and everyone’s included; whether or not you went to FG Miller. We’ll make you honourary Crusaders just for coming out. It’ll be a lot of fun; I promise,” Jena says don’t be discouraged if you’re not from Elk Point or you never went to school in the community. The event is open to everyone!
