Cardinal allegedly assaulted a police officer & fled from the scene
On February 18, 2017 at approximately 2:10 a.m., Cold Lake RCMP were dispatched to a possible impaired driver on 57 Street in Cold Lake parked in the road. The driver of the van who was believed to be intoxicated was reported to be passed out behind the wheel. Cold Lake RCMP attended the scene and located the suspect vehicle. The attending officer attempted to arrest the driver, Simon Erwin Cardinal, 23 years old of the Elizabeth Metis Settlement.
The officer was assaulted and the suspect vehicle sped away with the officer momentarily being caught up in the fleeing vehicle. The fleeing vehicle which was also stolen was located a short distance later and a pursuit was initiated. Spike belts were deployed deflating 3 of the suspect vehicles’ tires. The suspect fled on foot into the nearby woods and the assistance of St. Paul Police Dog Services was requested. A subsequent search did not locate the suspect. A warrant for the arrest of Simon Cardinal has been issued.
Simon Cardinal has been charged with Assaulting a Police Officer With a Weapon, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Flight while Pursued by Police, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, Possession of a Weapon x 2, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon, Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000, Drive While Unauthorized, Operate a Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Display Unauthorized Plate, and Possession of Methamphetamine. Simon Cardinal is also wanted on a Canada Wide Warrant for his arrest in relation to violating conditions of his parole.
