Bonnyville Man Fined & Suspended for going Double the Speed Limit

20 year old caught doing 202 kms in 100 km zone

A justice of the peace has sent out a strong message about excessive speeding after two motorists received hefty fines and lengthy driving suspensions in Boyle Provincial Court last week.

In the first case, a 20-year-old Bonnyville, Alta., man was sentenced with a $2,300 fine and a 60-day driving suspension on Feb. 21. This comes after the RCMP-Alberta Sheriffs Boyle Integrated Traffic Unit were conducting enforcement on Highway 831 south of Boyle on May 17, 2016, when a Camaro was seen passing other vehicles at a high rate of speed. Using radar, traffic unit members verified the speed of the vehicle as 202 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.

In the second case, a 31-year-old male from Calgary was given a $1,750 fine and had his licence suspended for 50 days, after he was convicted of speeding at a rate of 181 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. In this matter, traffic unit members were near Boyle on Highway 63 March 28, 2016, when they observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. The speed was verified using a laser.

Charges of speeding for more than 50 km/h over the speed limit are dealt with by way summonses.

Convictions come with a maximum fine of $2,300 and a driver’s licence suspension of up to 90 days.
