Tales from the Timebox: January 24th, 2017
You can tell your son or daughter it doesn’t really mater if you win or lose, but deep down everyone likes to win, and no one likes losing. But some years some teams just don’t have the right combination of players to win at the level they are playing. Even if you win a few games it picks up the kids sports.
The peewee Avalanche should have been playing in Tier III this year. Most of their players other than two returning veterans, team captain Kobe ‘the Cobra’ Warawa and the big D man Odin ‘the Wall’ Smith are still first year peewee players. They have been losing games in Tier II all year; but the league didn’t move them down at the beginning of December, because they had won one game and didn’t lose the rest by 10 goals or more. Last week, they played a very close game in St. Paul and only lost 5 to 4. So, maybe this is a sign that the year 2017 will be better for them!
On Saturday at home they played an exhibition game against Tier III team from Bonnyville and won for only the second time this year, and the team was ecstatic. Four goals plus an assist for ‘Mic Jager’ Fontaine. Landon ‘the Magnificent’ Malachowski with two goals. Team captain Kobe ‘the Cobra’ Warawa with one. He also added an assist, the big D man Odin ‘the Wall’ Smith hammering one in from the point; he also added an assist. Brady ‘the Bionic Man’ Hymanyk scoring his first goal of the year was awarded the Heart and Hustle for his efforts. Solid D Man Cea Jay Quinney on the score sheet with an assist. Goalie Vanden ‘Super Mario’ Moroziuk who was named the Gold in Net Athlete of the Month was outshot 59 to 23, but played super and kept the boys in the game. ‘Bazooka Joe’ Cardinal and ‘Wild Wyatt’ Pavol both played really well up front on the forward line, pressuring their defense. On our blue line Josef ‘Big Red’ Theriault and Dean ‘the Machine’ Ockerman making it tough on their forwards trying to get through to get a decent shot on the net.
This is the second week in a row that the novice 1 A team has won by the same score: a big 10 -4 good buddy! They played at home on Saturday winning over St. Paul 10 to 4. ‘Without a Trace’ Morgan was between the posts doing a terrific job of tracking the puck. ‘Stellar Ella’ Ballas scoring the first of two goals for her to get the ball rolling assisted by another female player ‘Hurricane Kayl’ Warawa. Then ‘Hurricane Kayl’ would go on scoring two goals. Madden ‘Mad Dog’ Flamand with a hat trick and Sebastien ‘Bruce’ Brousseau with a goal and two assists. ‘Notorious Nolan’ Ballas and Raif ‘Rug Rat’ Evans Anderson scoring one each. Everett Lindsey assisting on the ‘ Rug Rat’ goal.
Hats off to the micro novice Avalanche with hat tricks galore in this one.
Lots and lots and lots of scoring in their game Saturday morning against Frog Lake. Jackson ‘J. R.’ Rawlake scoring his first goal ever, then adding two more for a hat trick. His mom, the team manager Carrie Baumgardner, saving the puck putting it up on his trophy case. Hat tricks also for Remington ‘Steel’ Reynolds, Thomas ‘Commander Tom’ Melnyk, Wyatt Earp ‘Fontaine, Theo ‘Long Horn’ Loughran, Jaxon ‘Smitty’ Smith, and Denys ‘the Menace’ Kuba. Two goals for Davey ‘Crocket’ Cardinal and a single for Jonathon McAleese, and a few assists for Jaxon Marcoux.
Not a very easy day at the office for the novice 1 B masked man, ‘Good Time Charlie’ Lesyk who faced 65 shots when the Lac La Biche Clippers came calling on Sunday afternoon. But he was up for the task and never threw in the towel; although I’m sure he would have liked to. He did his part to keep this game under double digits. Kaysen ‘Dynamite’ Demoissac scoring the only goal for the Avalanche. Many of the Avalanche players would almost slip away on a break away, but the Clippers are a good team and would catch up to our forwards and tie them up before they could reach the net.
Another notch in the old hockey stick, for the league leading midget Avalanche after winning at home Friday night 6 to 3 over the Bonnyville Pontiacs. Goalie Shayne ‘Hercules’ Hurtubise was back in the cage after missing a few games with a lower body injury. His ankle was broken before and was injured at basketball a few weeks ago. He has made a quicker recovery than anyone had figured he would.
If you don’t like the taste of something just put a little ‘Ketchup’ on it, but I figure the Pontiacs had more than enough ‘Ketchup’ on this night. Kyle ‘Ketchup’ Kjenner had a great night, scored a hat trick and added an assist. Team ‘Captain Obvious’ Stafford with a goal and an assist. Slick and tricky Nick ‘Sparky’ Anderson with a goal and an assist. Bowen ‘Bam Bam’ Krider banging in a goal. Three assists for the big man Brody ‘Big O’ Odgaard. A couple of helpers for the hard nosed defenseman ‘Warrior Warren’ Ference.
The atom Avalanche played four games in two days in the St. Paul tournament this past weekend winning three out of four and winning the Bronze medal of the tournament. Coach James Capjack commented that, “it was teamwork that helped win these games. Work hard. Work smart. Work as a team.” Their first game on Saturday they beat Lacombe 7 to 3. The second game, later that day, they beat Bonnyville 5 to 2; even though, they were short two key defenseman. ‘St Nic’ Penner and Sam ‘Spiderman’ Rogal both missing for this game. Forwards Cash ‘CC’ Capjack and ‘King Kong Konnor’ Poitras stepped up filling in on the blue line. Sunday morning they played a Tier I team from Vegreville, losing a tough one 6 to 4. Vegreville scoring into the empty net when the Avalanche pulled the goalie for the extra attacker… Not just once, but twice.
Back to back games on Sunday the Avalanche, packing up their bags in one arena walking over to the other and started playing right away against Bonnyville, winning once more, this time 6 to 4 for the Bronze medal.
Let the games begin, The bantam Avalanche had this past weekend off, but are playing a provincial game in Mallaig on Tuesday night. The second game if necessary will be in Elk Point on Wednesday night. The atoms travel to Paradise Valley on Friday night for their first provincial game the return trip if necessary is on Saturday in Elk Point. The peewee team has a bye in the first round.
Our midgets are hosting the Midget Provincial D finals, so they wont be playing a provincial game until all the teams in our zone, except one, have been eliminated. AT that time, they will play for the title of zone champion or zone rep.
