Update #2

Police responded to this collision at 3:30 pm on January 9th.  A tanker truck, hauling oil, was stopped on the side of the road due to mechanical issues.  A truck travelling southbound hit the truck, causing the oil spill.  An estimated 50,000 litres of oil was spilled.  No other vehicles were involved in the collision.  No serious injuries were reported to police as a result of this collision.  There are no charges pending at this time.
Highway 63 Southbound continues to have only one lane open as crews continue with clean up.

One lane of Highway 63 southbound is now open.  There are still crews on scene doing clean up.  Please drive cautiously when passing the crews working.  An update will be sent when the highway is completely open.

Highway 63 Road Closure

The Southbound lane of Highway 63, 50 km south of Fort McMurray, near Hangingstone River, has been closed due to a collision which involved an oil spill.
Estimated time to clear the road is not known at this time.  Please respect the emergency crews on scene.
During the road closure, traffic will be diverted to Highway 881.
An update will be sent out when the road is open again.
