St. Paul Curling Club Celebrates 50 Years
Birthday Bonspiel planned for early January
The St. Paul Curling Club is celebrating 50 years with a Birthday Bonspiel to kick off 2017, on the weekend of January 13th-15th. The group plans on celebrating with a bonspiel for the curlers, a dance for the entire community, a the club plans to invite back some of the key people who help start the club in 1967.
The curling rink, part of the St. Paul Rec Centre, was a Canada Centennial project and erected in 1967. Not only is it important to the curling community in the town, but also to Town Council, who voted to support the event by waiving the rental fee of the Rec Centre, as well as, donate $1,000 to ensure the event’s success.
“A few buildings in St. Paul are 50 years old,” explains Mayor of St. Paul, Glenn Andersen, “the entire Rec Centre and the Landing Pad, as well. You can understand why [the Curling Club] wants to do something special.” The Town’s monetary commitment will help the club advertise the event, as well as arranging entertainment, food and other necessities.
The Birthday Bonspiel will launch the community’s Canada 150 Celebrations; which seems very fitting considering the facility was built as part of the community’s Centennial Celebrations. The Town’s $1,000 contribution will come out of the Canada 150 Celebrations budget.
