Local philanthropists wants you to know depression can happen to anyone & it’s nothing to be ashamed about

Curtis Hargrove, known for running across Canada and to California to raise money for charities and spread messages of hope, has a new mission, to open up about depression. The local philanthropist says following his run to the Ellen show last year, he fell into depression. After getting the help he needed, he’s ready to open and let people know, it can happen to anyone and there’s nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to mental health.

Hargrove says he’s never touched on his battle with depression at any other speaking engagement, “when you go to elementary schools, you want to talk about the good things, the videos, the people you meet on your travels. This time I have teens in the audience and some members of the public, I want to share the hard times that I’ve been through.”

“There’s a lot of things you see in the media, a lot of people suffering from depression, you see people being bullied on social media,” Hargrove says he was moved to act from these posts, “I want people to know they’re not alone. Everybody has their own story, you should never judge a book by it’s cover.”

“I’ve talked about having depression, but I’ve never actually talked about what really happened. There’s going to be students and adults in attendance; it’s free for anyone to attend.” Curtis Hargrove says he’s the guest speaker at Invisible Disabilities, a presentation held in St. Paul presented by RAAC (Regional Abilities Awareness Committee), SPAN (St. Paul Abilities Network) and the St. Paul Learning Council.

Invisible Disabilities hopes to shine a light on mental health issues that may make it difficult for people to function in day-to-day life. Hargrove says by sharing his story he hopes more people to reach out for help and feel like they’re not alone. The event is free to attend, though you must register, 780-614-6346.
