For as long  as I can remember the Kitscoty Pitbulls have been the biggest rivals for our midget teams . Way back in the late 90’s  the Midget Thunder would lock horns every year in the league playoff  and in provincial zone 2 play downs ; so the hype of Friday nights drama filled game had been building up all week. The Avalanche taking an one goal lead late in the first period when Nicky ‘ Sparky ‘ Anderson burst in over the blue line putting one right upstairs on the top shelf where mom keeps the cookies,  after he received a long bomb of a pass from Bowen ‘ Bam Bam’ Krider and  some work in the corner by Angus ” Micky’ McFarlane,  Sailing right along the Avalanche seemed to have this one in the bag after 40 minutes; the Avalanche were leading 5 to 2 at this point on goals by Hayden ‘ Hot Wheels’ Ludlage, assisted by Chase ‘ Rink Rat’ Dorey, Kyle ‘ Ketchup ‘ Kjenner assist by Cyle ‘ Grinder’ Graus, Chad ‘ Pick Pocket ‘ Poitras assisted by ‘Bam Bam’ and ‘ Captain Obvious’ Austin Stafford doing it all alone. But wait…. I spoke too soon, the Avalanche running into big time penalty trouble in the third, the Pitbulls taking advantage of this on the power play and would tie the game 5 all with only 2 minutes and 20 seconds left. Then with 43 seconds left in the game and the face off in the Pitbulls end, ‘Captain Obvious couldn’t have done it any better,, with a text book face off, winning the draw, pulling it back to the sharp shooter,  ‘Ketchup’ with a one timer into the twine….the one, only one’ Heinz Ketchup’ sending the Pitbulls home with their tails between their legs, 6 to 5 the final score.  Avalanche goalie Shane ‘ Hercules ‘ Hurtubise faced 53 shots and kept the boys in this game especially in the early going when they seemed to struggle getting out of the zone. .For a team that started out losing their first three games, coach Gerry Kjenner and the boys sure have turned a corner, winning the last three in a row and are now playing .500 on the season. this coming Sunday at 1pm the boys host Lamont in interleague play.  Last year both of these teams ended up going to the provincial finals, so this should be a real good one.

Clap for the ‘Wolfman’ !!! Wolke Cueva with four goals, ‘ Jaden ‘ Jetstream’ Van Maarion leaving the a trail of smoke with four goals, Charlie’ the Angel’ Rogal popping in two, ‘ King Cole’ Bendixen with a goal and 4 helpers, ‘ Hank the tank’ Rogal and ‘Silent Sam’ Henderson also with one each. Five assists for the set up man ‘ Lightning Liam’ Ludlage. The bantam Avalanche had no trouble at all winning over Mallaig on Saturday at home, final 13 to 2. Goalie  ‘ Sexy Slater’ Hardcastle wasn’t very  busy but came up big when called upon.  On Sunday night it was a whole different story when they faced the Bonnyville tier one team in an exhibishion game , that turned in to a donnybrook. The boys standing up for each other it was more like a bantam weight Sunday night fight. The final score 7 to 3 for Bonnyville tier # 1. ‘ Wolfman’, ‘Jetstream’ and the ‘Angel ‘ scoring for the Avalanche, Lightning Liam ‘ with a couple of helpers.

Another  tough game for  peewee Avalanche against Bonnyville Saturday afternoon, go-getter ‘ Mic Jagger’ Fontaine with the only goal, assisted by power forward ‘Bazooka Joey ‘ Cardinal.

Pounding the pavement all weekend, the Atom Avalanche winning up in Lac La Biche on Saturday 6 to 2 . The boys a little slu to start this one, , center-man Cash’ CC’ Capjack with the only goal in the first period  before the boys finally woke up; two goals each by ‘ King Kong Konnor’ Poitras, and ‘ Bo Diddley’ Fontaine,  Phoenix Quinney-Canning adding one too. Up early and on the road again on Sunday they won easily 12 to 1 over Cold Lake , who are considered to be one of the top teams in tier # 2 North East League.  ”CC’ Capjack  cashing in his paycheck with 5 goals ,  two goals each for Vaughn’ the Vulture’ Ockerman,  Phoenix Quinney-Canning, and ‘King Kong’; ‘ Bo Diddly with one. Sam ‘ Spiderman ‘ Rogal, Gavin ‘ Giver’ Kadutski  and Kaleb ‘ Formula One’ Flamand with some of the assists. Head coach James Capjack and the boys are just cruising along with seven wins in a row now for and the undefeated high flying  Atoms.

Sebastian Brousseau getting his first action between the pipes played just like his uncle B.J Tucker in his prime, when the novice A 1 team played a  home game against the Bonnyville # 3 team on Saturday losing a close one 7 t 4. A hat trick for Madden ‘ Mad Dog’ Flamand, birthday boy Raif ‘ Rug Rat’ Evans Anderson with one, Ella and brother ‘ Notorious Nolan’ Ballas with assists.

A great weekend for the Novice 1 B team winning over Saddle Lake on Saturday 11 to 6.  Evett ‘ Snoopy ‘ Smereka and B.J. Lesyk with a hat tricks, brother ‘ Good Time Charlie’ with two ,Miles Koren with a single. On Sunday they won over St. Paul; hat tricks for Keysen DeMoissac, ‘ Good Time Charlie’, and his brother B J Lesyk. A single for Miles Koren. First time goaltender Anna ‘ the Banana’ Henderson did a awesome job stopping the rubber between the pipes in both games this past weekend.

And now for the K. A. Campbell quote of the week “We’re going to turn this team around 360 degrees.”   – Jason Kidd
