St. Paul wins Second Battle of the Lakeland
Canadiens extend win streak to 12 games with win over rivals Cold Lake
The Cold Lake Jr B Ice hosted the St. Paul Jr B Canadiens for the second Battle of the Lakeland of the season. The first Battle went down at the Clancy in October with a tight 5-4 decision for the Canadiens. This time around, the game wouldn’t be so close, ending in a 5-1 win over the Ice for the Canadiens.
Head Coach of the St. Paul Canadiens, Joe Young, says it was huge for the club to win in Cold Lake. “We talked about it on the way to Cold Lake, I don’t think we’ve won here in a few years.” Coach Young says it was thanks to limited mistakes that the club was able to collect the two points, “we played well, got pucks deep, and the guys were really excited to play this game. We’re playing for something and we want to keep this streak going.”
The Canadiens launched their attack early in the first with a goal from Brayden Goulet, who called the goal, “huge. Our team is coming out gunning, so it’s always nice to see that first goal.” The Canadiens would pop in another goal before the close of the period from Damon Roy to make it a 2-0 game after 20 minutes.
Coach Scott Hood with the Cold Lake Ice, says his club showed spurts of energy on the ice, but has a ways to go. “St. Paul’s a good team. They keep it simple, they work hard and they shoot and they pass. That’s what hockey’s about and we stood around and watched it.”
The second was more watching from the Ice, as the Canadiens put in two more goals, one from Roddy MacDougall and another from Dyson Roy.
Heading into the third, down 4-0 the Ice picked up their feet. Jason Hamilton placed a beauty of a goal deep in the Canadiens net. The Ice seemed to bring the battle back for a good stretch of the final 20 minutes, until Canadiens’ Riley Wozniak placed the 5th goal in for the Canadiens.
“It comes down to practice,” says Coach Hood, “it’s time to get back to the basics and work hard; bare down at practice and see what happens.” The Ice meet the Killiam Wheat Kings Saturday at imperial Oil Place. Puck Drop at 7:30 pm. WIN tickets on LCN!
As for the Canadiens, to keep the win streak alive, Coach Young says it’s all about consistency. “We’re not going to sway to far from what we’re doing. Guys are working hard and playing good defensively. It seems like everything is falling into place.” Team atmosphere in the dressing room has a lot to do with success, says the coach. “I love it. Everybody gets along in there, they have each other’s backs; first and foremost, they’re a family.”
