Storm Warnings: November 8th, 2016

When head coach Jena Colbourne addressed the Storm bantam girl’s hockey team right before their first home game against one of the most elite teams in the province, she told them ,”if after the game you can look in the mirror and tell yourself that you did everything you possible could do, that you laid everything out there, that you tried you’re hardest; then you can be proud of yourself. And we will be too, whether we win or lose today.”

And I can tell you this right now, everyone of them can still look in the mirror today and know they did put their heart and soul into that game. The fact is half the Storm team is still peewee aged and didn’t come close to the size of the Irma team.  I’m not sure what they feed these girls these days but they were huge, and so was the Vermilion Tigers the team that beat the Storm 6 to 0 the day before down in Vermilion.

Peewee aged defense woman Jadey ‘ the Lady’ Capjack,  was the Storm Trooper in Saturdays game. She is not very big at all, but pound for pound one of the strongest and toughest girls on the team, and she battles hard for the puck every time in the corner and in front of the net and just doesn’t quit.

On Sunday forward Sydnee ‘ Syd the Kid’ Crawford was our Storm Trooper. She was fore-checking, back-checking and battled hard in this game, and she managed to get one of the few breakaway where she had to fight tooth and nail to make across center ice, then with two players hanging all over her she crossed the blue line and all the way to the net and still got one heck of a shot away. Their goalie made a beautiful toe save otherwise it was going in.  Some teams may back off a bit after a 10  goal lead , but Irma never let up all game, and neither did wingers Jenna ‘ Precious “ Poitras, Ashley ‘ Hacksaw’ Hunter and Avery ‘ Whirlwind ‘ Warawa, they all played a much more aggressive game than I’ve ever seen from them before. Center Laramie ‘ Louis’ Parr is another peewee aged player, doing a wonderful job on the faceoff winning some draws and always tying up her man when she didn’t.

The blue liners Georgia ‘ Gorgeous ‘ Bendixen and Jace ‘ Jackhammer’ Weidmark had their hands full, wave after wave of Irma players attacking,  but both played extremely well in this contest too. So did goaltender Heaven ‘ the Brick House’ Colbourne, she was pelted with the rubber in both games, but she’s a competitive athlete and one who will brush this weekend off and come to the rink more determined than ever the next time they meet.

So, what more can you ask of your team? Can they look in the mirror – You bet they can!  All of them can. And best of all they still came out of the dressing room with smiles on their faces ready to take on the next challenge, back to back game next weekend, Saturday in Wainwright, Sunday at home against Wainwright.

My good buddy K. A Campbell had two daughters who played for the Storm and are still playing in the city ladies beer league. His quote of the week is from the great poet Longfellow who once wrote. ‘ Not in the clamour of the crowed street, not in the plaudits of the throng, but in ourselves, are triumphs and defeats.’
