Renegades 3peat League Championship
Renegades defeat Lloydminister Steelers 72-14
Walsh field was electrified by fans on Sunday, as, with the backing of an undefeated season, the Bonnyville Peewee Renegades took the league championship. No doubt Head Coach of the Renegades, Kevin Sartain was joyous of the win, satisfied that his one requirement of the the club was fulfilled.
“If you can play with a full-heart and look yourself in the mirror after the game satisfied that you did everything possible, that you gave everything you had, then that’s all I want,” win or lose Sartain says it’s about the effort, commitment, and heart the kids display on the field – but boy, it must feel good for the coach to hold that championship cup up for the third year in a row.
The Renegades dominated most of the field on Sunday, with 50-0 at the half-time mark. Sartain wanted to ensure the team had a coushy lead, putting out his first stringers for the first half of the game. “I’ve been coaching football for four years now, I’ve been to Provincial two times, going on three times, I’ve seen a lot of different teams, [the Renegades] are the best peewee football team I’ve ever seen. We almost have 1600 yards passing this year.” At half-time the Renegades were almost at 200 yards passing.
We just go out there and have fun! My team is so good at doing this, every play is like playing on a playground – it’s just fun! – Duncan Critch Quarterback Bonnyville Peewee Renegades
“As you all know, this is my last home game as the Bonnyville Renegades coach,” Sartain says he let the club know at the start of the season he would be moving on to either Bantam or High School football following this season. Sartain is waiting for the Bonnyville Amateur Football Association to assign him to his new position; understanding that it won’t be a head coach position. He is eager to learn from the coaches at the Bantam or High School level to perfect his own coaching abilities.
“It’s been one heck of a four years. I’ve loved every minute of it; thank you for following me,” Sartain choked back emotions as he addressed his team. “Thank you for believing, you believed in me, as much as I’ve believed in you. This entire four years has been one heck of a ride!”
“We have one more [game]. We’re going down to Strathmore.” Next weekend, the Renegades will load up in the BAFA bus and head south for the Provincial showdown. “To Strathmore, I want you guys to know – The Bonnyville Renegades are coming!”
