Spooky, Original and Scary
2nd Annual Scarecrow Contest a hit
The Town of Elk Point Rec Department hosted their second annual Scarecrow Contest during the month of October. It was some stiff competition with ten business scarecrows entered and one residential.
“It’s really fun to see the community get so involved in the contest,” says Rec Coordinator for the Town, Jena Colbourne. “The scarecrows were very original this year. It was really tough for the judges to pick their favourite; but I believe one of the main reasons the judges choice winner was chosen was the fact that it was something the judges had never thought of doing to build a scarecrow.”
The winning business, under judges choice, Signature’s Collision & Frame used autobody parts to build their scarecrow. “The scarecrow even looked friendly during the day; then evil as the sun set. Absolutely perfect!” laughs Colbourne. The judges choice winners received a pizza party for their efforts.
“We had a fan favourite category this year and residents voted on Facebook or by email and phone calls. The youth group at the community church did such a fantastic job and the votes came pouring in. Their scarecrow pair was decorated outside the Heritage Lodge, seniors homes, and I’m pretty sure every single resident in the home voted for them.” The fan favourite category winners will also receive a pizza party.
The residential category only had one scarecrow this year, “but it was fabulous,” says Colbourne, who noted that the residential winner, The Bassetts, have received a $100 cash prize.
“Really, all the scarecrows were amazing. I wish I had a prize for all of them. There was a lot of hard work and creativity put into them. Each business incorporated elements of their business into the scarecrow; which was really cool to see. Seriously, I loved them all!”
