Lost in the Game

Baseball is one of those sports that’ll trap you in a time vortex

peggy-maasToday’s story is dedicated to my very good friend, Gramma Peggy Maas who turns 93 years old today. She was born on Oct 11 1923. She was a great neighbour of ours for 25 years and was and still is an early bird. She made me coffee and toast at 5 am in the morning. Then we would go for about a 45 minute walk together with my dog (s).  In fact she made toast for my dogs,  I had two of them over the course of 30 years. Rain or shine or 30 below we would still go for a walk. Now she’s in the lodge just across the road , but she  is still up every morning before 6am.  I still go and have a coffee  and visit with her after my walk and before work. And of course a little snack, since I’m still walking every morning and need a little boost.

Ok, Ok, Blue Jays, Blue Jays,…. lets play ball ! Crazy ending to the game on Sunday night, but nothing  ever ceases to amaze me when it comes to baseball.  Just when you think you’ve seen it all, something unusual and totally crazy will happen. Sometimes it’s good for your team and sometimes it’s a bad thing. That throwing error on Sunday night by the Rangers couldn’t happen at a better time or to a better guy, Rangers player Odor. But, look at last year when Goins and Bautista had a communication breakdown in right field on a short blooper and the ball dropped untouched between them. Or when Russell Martin hit the batter throwing the ball back to the pitcher. Even the umpire couldn’t figure that one out.

Over the years some people have said baseball is too boring to watch; but, once you really get into the game, its not boring its addicting. Last Friday is a perfect example. I wasn’t planning on watching  the game at all . Came home at lunch time, turned it on to check the score, then checked on the score a few times more, everything is going good, until it isn’t! When they got to the 8th inning and the pitcher Lariano  got hit by a line drive – that was it!  I had to sit down and watch it until the end of the game, couldn’t turn it off.

More great stuff to come later this weekend and you can bet it will be stressful, but that’s when baseball is at its best.  You wouldn’t want it any other way. The boys in blue needed the rest so its perfect that the Red Sox and Indians are still playing and the next round will not start until Friday.

And now for the K. A. Campbell quote of the week. ‘ Why does everybody stand up and sing” Take me out to the ball game” when they’re already there? ‘
