Bonnyville Pontiacs pick up two points in Fort McMurray

“Anytime you can pick up two points in Fort McMurray it’s a success,” Head Coach Rick Swan says he was pleased with the effort he saw on the ice Wednesday evening at the Casman Centre. “I know our guys had to earn it and work for it.”

The Pontiacs fires first with a power play goal from newbie,  Trygve Many Guns  at 11:27 with veterans, Erik Donald and Captain Ryan Symington picking up the apples. “We played a very good team in Fort McMurray,” the Oil Barons answered back before the end of the first, explains Coach Swan. Fort Mac’s Brett Edwards put one in to tie up the game at 17:35 with Taner Miller and JC Thivierge getting the assist.

“We learned from the start that they had in Bonnyville, that we had to play the full 60 minutes in order to get the success we wanted,” Coach Swan referring to the two exhibition wins Fort McMurray took from Bonnyville in the preseason. Bonnyville definitely learned that staying idle against the physical strong Fort Mac team would not be an option and fired first in the second, as well.  Rookie Isaac Saniga put in his first goal as a Bonnyville Pontiac. The 16 year old had some help from veteran Alden Dupuis and 18 year old defenseman, Jake Gresh.

Fort McMurray’s  Shane Fraser put in an unassisted goal mid-way through the second to tie the game once again. It wasn’t long after that Josh Borynec  placed the game winner in the mesh with the help of Carter Rhine and Preston Kugler. The Pontiacs would be the sole scorers in the third with a beauty from Dupuis at 18:57 with Derek Brown and Rhine getting some points on that one.

“We had some good performances all around from the solid forward lines that we had,” Coach Swan was proud of his crew and is looking forward to showcase weekend. It’s the squad’s chance to shine in front of college level scouts. Often there are a few NHL scouts hidden in the crowds in Camrose, as well. The Pontiacs will play two games during the weekend, each against Calgary teams, the Mustangs on Friday and Canucks on Saturday.
