Elk Point Group Aims to Enhance Kids’ Lives
The Early Childhood Development Committee (ECDC) is hosting a kids’ carnival tomorrow to celebrate the grand unveiling of five murals that reflect the five stages of childhood development.
Elk Point was selected by the Province to participate in a series of early childhood studies, from those studies the ECDC group was formed, which mandate is to enhance early childhood development in the community through programs and services. Committee member, Melanie Poulin, who also operates a daycare in the community says the event is a way to showcase Elk Point’s children’s services to the community.
“We’re having children;s activities; a bouncy castle, face-painting, henna drawing, sidewalk chalk, games. Just activities for kids.” On Saturday the town’s annual car show is taking place a block and a half over, on main street and community-wide garage sales throughout town. Poulin hopes families will make the most of their day, attend all events and take in all that Elk Point has to offer. “We’re trying to build a community for the kids.”
The murals were commissioned by local artist Herman Poulin. The artist used inspiration provided by kids in the community, as well as the ECDC directive to design the five panels. The artist has donated his services to host three seperate drawing sessions, for any age, confirms Poulin. “If they want to try, they are more than welcome to do it and they will take home their own artwork on a canvas.”
“We want to build this Kids’ Carnival at the same time every year.” Events are FREE and will be designed for kids 0-12 years old. The unveiling will happen at 1:00pm.
