Alexandra Shapka, a grade 11 student from École Notre Dame High School, was selected to participate in this year’s Mr. Speaker’s MLA for a Day. The MLA for a Day program was held May 1st to May 3rd at the Alberta Legislature in Edmonton.
This program allowed Alexandra to have a chance to see what takes place at the Alberta Government from a new angle. The three-day program is intensive and it is designed to give Alberta high school students the chance to find out what it really means to be an MLA. It provides an exciting opportunity to experience the view of democracy at work in our province and share ideas with other high school students from across Alberta.
During this program, students meet Members of the Legislative Assembly, observe Session and debate an issue in the provincial Chamber. Through conversations with Members, students learn more about the role of an MLA and experience firsthand what it’s like to deal with diverse points of view when making decisions on provincial issues.
For students who are interested in politics, participating in programs like MLA for a Day helps them get a better understanding of the political process. Our students are our future leaders. Students who have a desire to get involved in the process, learn so much and if they have that opportunity at the high school level, it helps them to develop their future career paths.
Congratulations Alexandra on this incredible opportunity. We are very proud of you.
